“One Nation, Under God”
II Samuel 7:22-26
I. The Similarities between Israel and the U.S.A.
A) The works he had done for them
- Look at verse 23... “ And what one nation in the earth is like thy
people, even like Israel, whom God went to redeem for a people to himself, and
to make him a name, and to do for you great things and terrible, for
thy land, before thy people, which thou redeemedst to thee from Egypt,
from the nations and their gods?”
- He came to redeem (Buy back something that was given up) them. How
many times has the nation Israel and the American people been given
another chance to redeem themselves after much sin? 1. Israel was redeemed
from the nations and their gods (Many religions). We too are redeemed
from the sins of our nation and it's gods (many religions). 2. Israel
is to be a “peculiar people” unto God. Peculiar means; one's own, different
or odd. This is what American people are also. We are different than
any other nation on the side of God. · God has done so much for Israel.
God has done so much for America.
B) The covenant He made with them.
- Look at verse 24... “For thou hast confirmed to thyself thy people
Israel to be a people unto thee for ever: and thou, LORD, art become
their God.”
- America has always claimed to be “One Nation Under God.” At one time
we were very devout to our God and Savior. But like Israel, we have
become a nation of many gods.
C) A covenant broken
- What happens when a covenant (Contracted agreement)is broken?
- If you sign a contract to buy a house; You agree to provide insurance
for it, make payments on it until it is paid off, and pay the penalties
if it is late.
- When two people are married; The two people agree to love, honor
and cherish one another till death do they part, to take care of one
another, provide for one another and to never let any person stand in
the way of this marriage (Let no man put asunder)
- When a contract, or marriage or any agreement is broken... there
is a penalty that must be paid or taken care of.
II. A Nation Who Forgets God
A) God will pluck them up (destroy them)
- Jeremiah 12:15-17 But if they will not obey, I will utterly pluck
up and destroy that nation, saith the LORD.
- Note verse 16... “If they will diligently learn the ways of my people”
- What are the ways of His people? Study the entire Bible and know
how God's people act. B) If they repent
- Jeremiah 18:8 If that nation, against whom I have pronounced, turn
from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do unto
them.”
- Our nation must repent (change our ways)
III. We Could Be A Blessing
A) If we make God our only God
- Psalms 33:12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD; and the
people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance.
- The very first of Ten Commandments...Exodus 20:3 Thou shalt have
no other gods before me.”
B) If we repent of our ways
- Show sorrow for our actions.
- Then truly make a change in our ways.
IV. What Will It Take?
A) Us being an example
- Christ was our example.
- We need to be an example to the world.
